Tetris Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a prominent prize-giving event approaches, there’s always a clamor for the addition additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories actually cover many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely in 2014
  • Another creative title received no nominations that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
  • Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
